On the evening of Nov. 1, a man was seen shooting and then abandoning two doe mule deer on U.S. Highway 24, about two miles east of Wilkerson Pass, in the Lake George area. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers are asking for help finding the person responsible for the shooting.

Two legal hunters across the highway witnessed the man pull his half-ton blue truck over to the side of the road, and then fire two shots along the south side of the highway. The truck appeared to have silver running boards and a silver tool box in the truck bed.

The truck may have been a Ford F-150, but the witnesses were not certain of the identification.

“This incident occurred in GMU (Game Management Unit) 581 but just south of its border with GMU 50,” said District Wildlife Manager Ian Petkash. “The man, who was not wearing any blaze orange, sprinted across the meadow, looked at something in the trees for a brief time, then sprinted back to his vehicle. The suspect was described as a Caucasian man in his twenties or thirties with brown hair.”

After the truck drove away the witnesses found one of the deer, shot and abandoned. When wildlife officers arrived and searched the area, they found an additional dead doe and recovered a small 24-25 caliber bullet from one of the deer.

“This type of wanton waste and illegal behavior is not condoned by ethical hunters,” added Petkash.
