Statement from EPRD concerning the accident on Evergreen Lake on Jan. 22, 2015

Evergreen, CO (Jan. 27, 2015) --

Evergreen Park & Recreation District (EPRD) would like to extend its sincere appreciation to all the individuals and agencies that assisted with the rescue effort and vehicle recovery surrounding the accident on Evergreen Lake last week - Evergreen Fire Rescue, West Metro Fire/Rescue Divers, the Jeffco Sheriff's Department, Evergreen Metropolitan District, Jeffco Road and Bridge, EPRD Park Operations staff, and even Beau Jo's Pizza, which fed the workers.

We want to reassure the public that the Evergreen Lake Ice Rink is located in a maintained area of the Lake, and remains open to the public as a safe place to enjoy skating. The rink is measured daily in up to 48 locations to ensure a depth of at least 12 inches. However, ice is changeable depending on weather conditions, so it is always best to check the Ice Skating Hotline at 720-880-1391 before coming to the lake.

The Ice Golf Tournament was planned in an open area of the Lake not maintained for ice skating. As a cautionary measure, EPRD has cancelled all other events that were planned this winter on unmaintained areas of the ice -- including the annual Veterans fishing day (an outside event scheduled for Feb. 1) and the Evergreen Ice Bike Race (Feb. 28) - while it conducts a thorough review of procedures, seeking to learn from this tragedy additional ways to proceed in the future to ensure safety in all aspects and areas of the Lake. In the case of the Ice Golf Tournament, EPRD would like to clarify that orange cones had been placed on Wednesday, the day before the accident occurred, around the weak spot in the ice where the RTV went into the water.

We thank and commend the Evergreen community for your support of EPRD, the Fire Department and rescue workers, Blue Spruce Kiwanis and the family of Greg Henika during this trying time.

Evergreen Park & Recreation District (EPRD) was formed in 1969 to serve the park and recreation needs of the communities of Evergreen, Bergen Park, Indian Hills, Kittredge and Marshdale. EPRD serves approximately 23,000 people residing within its boundaries, and offers affordable recreational options to non-district residents. Learn more at www.evergreenrecreation.com/
