What exactly IS a charter school?

Some 7,500 students currently attend Jefferson County’s 17 charter schools. Enrollment at these schools is growing faster than in district neighborhood schools. Why are parents sending their children to these schools in unprecedented numbers? Why are they drawing so much attention nationally and more specifically in Jeffco?

The League of Women Voters of Jefferson County is taking a closer look at these schools at its April 14-16 unit meetings to learn what they are about: what their philosophies are such as Montessori or Core Knowledge; how they operate; how they are funded; and what they look like. The League’s Education Committee has put together a booklet for LWV members with in-depth information about charter schools’ history, legislation and specifics about Jefferson County Charter Schools as a resource for meeting discussions. The booklet is available to the public. Visit our webpage at www.lwvjeffco.org for ordering information or contact our office at This email address is being protected from spambots. In the foothills area, the League will meet at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Highland Rescue Team Ambulance Service, 317 S. Lookout Mountain Road, Golden 80401. Call Janet at 303-674-7755 for more information. The League also has an evening meeting. For information, call Lucinda at 720-254-5741 or visit www.lwvjeffco.org .

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that neither supports nor opposes candidates from any party. The League’s mission is to promote informed and active participation in government and to influence public policy through education and advocacy after consideration by its members.
