At approximately 4:20 p.m. Sunday, a wildland fire ignited along County Road 56 (Lost Creek Road), about two miles south of U.S. Highway 285, between Kenosha Pass and Jefferson.
Assisted by winds blowing north to south, the fire quickly spread to 100 acres, fueled by bristlecone pine, spruce fir, aspen and grass.
According to a press release from the South Park Ranger District, the fire was caused by sparks from ammunition used in target shooting. The origin point of the fire was found, with shell casings on the ground and a target nearby.
The fire burned on forest service land near Lost Creek Road. Jefferson-Como Fire Protection District, The U.S. Forest Service, Park County Sheriff’s Office, South Park Ambulance, Northwest Fire Protection District and Platte Canyon Protection Fire District responded.
