Children are best raised in families, not institutions, said Barack Obama in an April 30 presidential proclamation recognizing May as National Foster Care Month.
“At the heart of the American story is the simple truth that all children should have a fair chance at success,” Obama said. “No matter who they are or where they come from. ”
He reported that over the last decade, the United States has made significant progress in reducing the number of young people in foster care, but the statistics are still staggering. There are more than 400,000 children in the country’s foster care system. More than 100,000 of them are waiting to be adopted, and every year, 23,000 young people age out of the system.
