On Tuesday, May 12, at approximately 8:44 a.m., a 2001 Buick Century, driven by 76-year-old John Tonnsen from Littleton, Colo., was travelling southbound on U.S. Highway 285 near Shawnee milepost 216, about eight miles south of Bailey. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Buick abruptly crossed over the double yellow center line and traveled into the path of a northbound 2000 Peterbilt Park County Public Works Department dump truck loaded with river rock, killing the driver of the Buick.
After the impact, both the county truck and the Buick left the road on opposite sides from their original direction of travel.
