School meals unavailable during summer, hunger persists for some

There are children that stand in the cafeteria line at school knowing it might be the best meal of the day. When summer rolls around that same child may be at a greater risk of going hungry due to loss of access to those school meals. The Summer Food Service Program attempts to fill that gap.

The SFSP is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and is administered by the Colorado Department of Education along with help from Hunger Free Colorado. There are 533 community sites across the state that provide meals to children who are 18 years of age or younger, at no cost to the child’s family.

“All children should have access to the fuel needed for healthy lives, so they can thrive in and out of school,” said Kathy Underhill, executive director for HFC.
