We've heard reports that there was possibly a recent credit card skimmer attack at a local gas station in Conifer. Please learn more about this type of thievery at today's Safety Fair
Credit Card Skimmers Are A Handy Tool For Thieves
August 20, 2015

In his position with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, Cooper says that skimmers are sometimes found at gas stations and ATMs. There are internal versions that can be put inside the gas pump station. The card user would never know his or her information was being stolen. There are also fake keyboards, and false fronts that go over the legitimate card reader, so the criminals are stealing information while the real transaction is happening.

Keeping track of your transactions is very important because there is no real way to protect yourself from a skimmer before it happens.

Learn more about tracking your finances and protecting your personal information by shredding old financial documents at the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Safety Fair. The fair is Saturday, August 22nd from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

Nick's Café is joining with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to help keep kids safe from online sexual predators.

On August 23, the owners of Nick's Café, located at 777 Simms Street in Lakewood, will be will be serving up hamburgers and hot dogs as a fundraiser for the District Attorney’s Child Sex Offender Internet Investigation (CHEEZO) unit. There will be great food and lots of entertainment:

Dennis Thornberry, the "Colorado Elvis"
A car show
Facepainting for the kids
And, of course, Cheezo will be there!

The DA’s CHEEZO unit has two components – education programs and undercover investigations. The unit is run by senior investigator Mike Harris who says that the most important work they do is education – teaching kids and parents how to stay safe online.

Cheezo is the mascot for the DA’s Internet and cell phone safety programs. This five foot, yellow, cool cat accompanies Harris and his team into schools and helps teach Internet and cell phone safety to parents and kids. In the last eight years, Harris has talked to over 225,000 kids about the dangers of sexual predators online. The other function of the CHEEZO unit is undercover investigations. Harris and his team have arrested 560 online predators.

In 2006, the District Attorney’s Office established a 501(c)(3) non-profit community partnership to facilitate raising money for this and other prevention programs. Shrinking government budgets alone didn’t allow the DA’s Office to continue prevention programs deemed vital in protecting the community from crime. Private donations to the District Attorney’s Community Partnership allows the CHEEZO programs to stay in the community teaching kids and parents about Internet and cell phone safety.

We really appreciate a chance to partner with Nick and Kathy, the owners of Nick's Café, to help keep kids safe online,” said DA Peter Weir, “The Community Partnership was created for situations just like this.”

For more information about the CHEEZO program, contact Investigator Mike Harris at 303-271-6936.
