The 6th Annual Dam Ducky Derby sponsored by Evergreen Downtown Business Association is Saturday August 1st from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. in downtown Evergreen. Fun games and activities, face painting and a bouncy tent will be set up in the downtown parking lot. The popular Evergreen group, Frangelo, will provide live music and Balloon artist "Dornob" will be at Evergreen Mountain Village. Ducky T-shirts and other ducky merchandise will be for sale, too.
The DUCK DROP at the Dam is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. where crowds will gather to watch approximately 4,000 ducks drop, then follow the racing ducks through downtown along Bear Creek to the finish line at Highland Haven Inn. $3,000 in cash prizes plus additional merchant prizes will be awarded at 2:30 in the downtown parking lot.
Ducks can still be purchased on-line at the damduckyderby.com website, and downtown at Seasonally Yours and Evergreen Crafters. Ducks can be purchased on the day of the Derby at Seasonally Yours and at Cactus Jack’s from 9:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Winners do not need to be present to claim their prize.
Parking is available with shuttle bus service at Church of the Hills on Buffalo Park Road (across from the Evergreen Library), Hiwan Museum (RTD lot on Meadow Drive), and the RTD lot near Christ the King church (Hwy 74 near Dedisse Park). Three shuttle buses operated by the Evergreen Senior Resource Center will run from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Due to the unsafe fast-running creek waters people are urged to stay out of the creek. "Evergreen Fire Rescue hopes everyone will enjoy the Dam Duck Derby. We are asking the public to please keep your family and pets away from the waters’ edge and do not attempt to enter the water. Bear Creek is still running swiftly, contains many hazards hidden under the water and is extremely cold. Please help us ensure that the Dam Duck Derby is a successful and safe event," cautions Fire Chief Mike Wegee.
