Jeffco LWV to discuss process of amending the U.S. Constitution

The U.S. Constitution is difficult to amend. In fact, in the more than 220 years since the first ten amendments known as the Bill of Rights were ratified in 1791, the constitution has been amended only 17 times. History tells us that the framers of the constitution deliberately made it difficult to alter in order to prevent tyranny of the majority; to protect the rights of the minority from oppression.

The League of Women Voters of Jefferson County will be participating in a U.S. League of Women Voters national study of the process of amending the U.S. Constitution. The League believes it is right and permissible to amend the constitution when circumstances demand it. The League itself was born from a decades-long effort to pass the 19th Amendment. The LWV will be exploring the shared values and beliefs of members regarding circumstances that might allow or compel it to endorse either a constitutional amendment or an Article 5 Convention and members will answer consensus questions during its six unit meetings Nov. 10-12.

The League meets in the Evergreen-Foothills area at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Highland Rescue Team Ambulance District, 317 S. Lookout Mountain Rd., Golden 80401. Call Janet, 303-674-7755 for information. All are welcome. An evening meeting also is available. Call Lucinda at 720-254-5741 for details.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that neither supports nor opposes candidates from any party. The League’s mission is to promote informed and active participation in government and to influence public policy through education and advocacy after consideration by its members.
