Deer Creek Elementary students tackle computer programming head on

Whether it’s creating new galaxys for “Star Wars” droids, helping Anna and Elsa explore their “Frozen” world, directing Angry Birds to attack pigs or making up new stories altogether, Deer Creek Elementary School students are getting a head start into the world of computer science by learning the basics of programming and having a lot of fun while doing it.

In a class facilitated by teacher Julie Mansk, using curriculum developed by Code.org, kindergarten through fifth grade kids at DCES students are guided through goal-oriented challenges. The modules are broken down into age-appropriate lessons, each lesson building on the skills learned in previous lessons.

“There are tutorials for beginners,” Mansk said. “Last year, I had a kindergarten student write 17 lines of code.”
