Our fascination with the little redheaded orphan girl has been going on since the first comic hit the newspapers on Aug. 5, 1924.

Written originally by Harold Gray, the comic strip still appears in newspapers across the country.

In 1977, the character was lifted from the pages of the newspaper and the Broadway musical “Annie” hit the stage, running for six years.

According to The New York Times, it estimates that Annie is produced 700 to 900 times each year in the United States.

The original production was nominated for 11 Tony awards and snagged seven of the 11 prizes, including best musical, score and book.
