At its weekly board meeting March 17, the Park County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution opposing a transfer or sale of public lands to the state of Colorado or to local governments.
Proposed resolution 2016-13 opposing the effort by special interest groups that have been lobbying state governments and U.S. Congress for America’s public lands to be privatized or auctioned for drilling, mining, and logging was approved unanimously by the commissioners.
“There are some that feel the land would be better off in the hands of the private citizens but we’ve taken the stand that the Federal government is doing a good job,” commissioner Mark Dowaliby said. “This would endanger public lands from the public being able to use them.”
51 percent of Park County land is under the management of the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
