Last week marked another such step as she was inducted into the Denver and Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame, chosen by the past chairs of the nonprofit Visit Denver’s board.
Kinney’s parents built what is now The Fort restaurant in the early 1960s as a replica of the historic Bent’s Fort on the Santa Fe Trail. It serves food of the early West and has become an iconic tourist destination.
The award is about much more than Kinney’s work at The Fort. Since she joined what is now Visit Denver, Denver’s nonprofit trade association that promotes the city and Colorado tourism, in the late ’90s, she was on the committee that created Denver Restaurant Week, pushed for promotion of the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway and served on the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, advising the Obama administration on tourism issues.
This summer, The Fort and the Tesoro Cultural Center will debut a “Living History Experience” event every weekend beginning June 2 and taking place through October.
