Pastor’s family adventure on Escalante River almost turned into a tragedy

Platte Canyon Community Church Youth Pastor Jay Vonesh, his wife Julie and his two daughters, Jessica, 18, Janae, 13, both students at Platte Canyon High School, and their chocolate Labrador Jamocha, got a bigger adventure than they bargained for during a spring break rafting trip on the Escalante River in south-central Utah.

Vonesh likes adventure outings and his wife stumbled across pictures of the river and started to pitch the idea to Vonesh.

“Is this something we could do?” Julie asked.

Vonesh said he got the bug for this trip and started to do some research, pulling information off the internet, weather forecasts, images and videos, maps and reading about other people’s trips on the river.
is it something I can do without the family, is it too big a risk, too hairy or is it something we can do as a family?” Vonesh said. “As I looked at it, it became clearer to me that this is right up our alley.”
