The North London Mill site on County Road 12, known as Mosquito Pass, outside of Alma in Park County, has been recognized by the Park County Historic Preservation Advisory Committee as a local landmark.
From 1892 to 1937, the North London Mill, which sits at 11,400 feet, processed one of Colorado’s richest gold strikes. It is an iconic feature at the base of Mosquito Pass, before the historic road begins its ascent to the summit at 13,200 feet and continues to Leadville.
With historical research assistance from Christie Wright at the Park County Local History Archives and local historian Jerry Davis and research funding from the State University of New York at New Paltz, the application for landmark recognition was submitted by North London Mill Preservation, Inc., a Colorado 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded earlier this year.
NoLo’s mission is to plan, finance, preserve and manage the historic buildings of the North London Mill site, rehabilitating them as back country accommodations.
