“Urinetown: The Musical,” clever and first-rate

The Venue Theatre opened their newest high school-age production, “Urinetown: The Musical,” and the show is well worth a look.

The cast performed very well in a difficult lyrical show. Although the title puts some people off, the message of this show and the way it is carried throughout the show make it important for everyone to see.

“Urinetown: The Musical” debuted at the New York International Fringe Festival. After its Fringe Festival debut, the musical ran off-Broadway from May 2001 until June 2001.

The show then ran on Broadway Sept. 20, 2001, until Jan. 18, 2004, running for 965 shows plus 25 previews. The show was nominated for nine Tony Awards, bringing home three statues for Best Book for a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Direction of a Musical.
