And so his story begins… Jake’s journey began 16 weeks before he even entered into the world. Shortly after his 1st birthday, Jake experienced his first surgery on May 2, 2001. The intended procedure was a right side ureteroureterostomy and a left side extravesical re-implant. Sometime later, and much to his current demise; the surgery caused irreversible nerve damage to his bladder.
Finally, in May of 2009, Dr. Blyth performed his fifth surgery. Jake now sees a pediatric nephrologist every month to monitor his condition and lab work to monitor his kidney failure. His one remaining kidney is currently functioning at about 15% and at the age of 17 (almost 18), he is preparing to start dialysis. Testing will begin shortly to see if his parents can be his donor. Assuming they are a match, they anticipate that he will begin the transplant process mid -summer 2018. Unfortunately, due to his unique anatomy inside and the irreversible damage I/we shared with you above, Jacob will most likely have to have more than one transplant in his lifetime.
