Nice interview below with Ranger Lew!

I am evangelistic about getting people outdoors. I truly believe that outdoor activities can be life changing. This is true more than ever for people struggling with physical and emotional challenges.

On my recent radio show Robert Lewis from Staunton State Park joined me to discuss programs they offer to allow visitors with physical or emotional challenges to enjoy the park.

STAUNTON STATE PARK, Colo. (CBS4) – There are thousands of hiking trails in Colorado and more than 40 Colorado State Parks, but only Staunton State Park has a program giving visitors with disabilities a unique way to explorer the outdoors — at no cost to them.

The “track chair program” was an idea formed by Friends of Staunton State Park in memory of their own friend.

Wayne Parkinson is the president of the board and passionate about the program’s success.

Thank you to Karen Morfitt and CBS Denver for coming up to Staunton and highlighting the Staunton Track Chair Program!

Many people move out to the Centennial State for its proximity to nature. It’s home to dozens of stunning national and state parks as well as tens of thousands of lush, pine-flecked trails. Yet, last summer when Colorado Parks and Wildlife released a state map noting 39,000 trails in Colorado, able-bodied folks may not have realized that only a tiny fraction of those trails are handicap accessible. Things are slowly improving though. Since legislation like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) passed in 1990, Colorado’s parks and trails have become more inclusive. And while there is still plenty that needs to be done, we’ve compiled a list of the best outdoor and handicap accessible experiences in the Centennial State.

This heartwarming message was posted by Helen Gardner to Staunton State Park's Facebook Page a few days ago. It made our day!

The planets aligned perfectly today. The Staunton State Park Track Chair program books months in advance so naturally we called FRIDAY to inquire. A last minute cancellation and willing volunteer combined with the clearest weather in WEEKS and Noah got his hike in.

To make it that much better, our guide, Kevin Noel was like an old friend and it turns out he and I have lots of friends in common in the cycling community. Kevin, you were awesome! Thanks for the chat, the hike and supporting Helen & Noah's Big Adventure.

Staunton State Park - Colorado Parks and Wildlife is one of the only state parks in the COUNTRY with an adaptive hiking program of this kind and it is 100% volunteer and donation based. And it just happens to be in my backyard.

There are no coincidences in life. Today was the perfect example of leaving ourselves open to new experiences...and this was one of the very best!
