Weekend opportunities available as well from July 19-20, July 21-22, July 26-27, or July 28-29. Please note your preferred schedule in the comments section when you register.

Volunteers should plan on arriving at the campsite between 6pm and 8pm on the first day of the session, and departing around 5pm on the last day.

WHO CAN COME: All are welcome, no experience is necessary! Those age 14-17 must have a parent/guardian onsite; those under age 14 are not permitted on HistoriCorps projects with rare exceptions.

CAMP & KITCHEN HELPER POSITION: New for 2018! We have one spot available per session for a volunteer who, instead of project work, prefers to help our field staff with camp and kitchen chores. If you're interested in this position, choose that ticket below and register normally.

PROJECT SITE DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY:
Denver's mountain parks are an important asset to the region both today and historically. In the early 1900s, Denver voters approved funding to create a mountain park in the foothills west of the city, and by 1912 Mr. Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr. was hired to plan this new park system. Over the next 27 years, several pockets of land were purchased "for the purpose of assuring perpetually to the residents of Denver the sublime scenery of the Rockies, the preservation of native forests and having for all time a pleasure ground in the mountains for the thousands of annual visitors to the city easily accessible" (source). Denver Mountain Parks' history was featured on Rocky Mountain PBS' Colorado Experience series. The episode can be viewed here.

For this project, HistoriCorps volunteers will tackle Bergen and Fillius Parks' wellhouses, which need some TLC to remove modern graffiti, stabilize rafters, and rehabilitate stone masonry.

Bergen Park is featured on The Cultural Landscape Foundation's website.
