August 15: Mark Madsen Accessibility Celebration at Staunton State Park

10 Aug 2020 22:18 #1 by FriendsofStauntonStatePark

Today marks 5 years since Mark Madsen passed away, but his memory lives on forever in the hearts of those who loved him and in the legacy he inspired at Staunton State Park for accessibility for those with disabilities. In the past 5 years, the Friends of Staunton State Park have been able to purchase 5 Action Trackchairs, thanks entirely to the huge support of our generous donors, and continue to support the ground-breaking Staunton Track Chair Program. In that time, Track Chair volunteers and park staff have taken out over 500 visitors with disabilities for hikes and fishing trips with friends and family.

This coming weekend would normally be our Annual Mark Madsen Accessibility Celebration BBQ. As we wish to keep everyone's health and safety as a top priority, we will not be holding our usual potluck, but you can still find us at the park on Saturday, August 15th from 8am-12pm where we will be handing out goodie bags (while supplies last!) as our way of saying thank you to all of you who have helped support our efforts to put smiles on the faces of all who come to visit Staunton. Donations are always welcome, and immensely appreciated, to keep this amazing program going, allow us to preserve Staunton's historical structures (our other capstone project) and continue to support the amenities of Staunton State Park.

In lieu of our usual potluck BBQ, three wonderful local restaurants have generously offered to donate a portion of their proceeds to us that day in order to help us fundraise. Please visit Aspen Peak Cellars, Brooks Place Tavern, or Rocky Mountain Wraps during their business hours and tell them you are there for Friends of Staunton State Park! It's a win-win, as you are helping support a local business and your favorite Friends group at the same time. Eat Local ~ Support Local!

We'll see you this Saturday, or out and about on the trails otherwise! Thank you for all of your support, we can't tell you how much we appreciate you.

We'd like to do a special shout-out to Rocky Mountain Wraps for sponsoring our Mark Madsen Accessibility Celebration this coming weekend! Bill and Kate Bedortha are the "happy and proud owners" of Rocky Mountain Wraps and you can find them busily filling orders at their place in Conifer at 25997 Conifer Rd (between Healthy Smiles and the Loaf N Jug gas station). They serve "Grab n Go PITA Wraps including falafel, hummus, grilled chicken, gyros and cheesesteak, soup of the day, salads, tabbouleh, hummus and veggies with pita" and it's all tasty.

Call ahead to place an order (303-832-2963) or stop by, and keep them in mind for catering too! When you stop by, please tell them thank you for supporting the Friends of Staunton State Park, and accessibility for all who wish to get outdoors.
