Because of the pandemic, last March marked the first time in nearly two decades that Nederland’s beloved festival Frozen Dead Guy Days didn’t fill the streets with macabre merriment, music and coffin races.
While the long-running event, that has attracted 25,000 attendees in prior years, will once again not happen the second weekend in March, organizers remain hopeful for an eventual resurrection — perhaps in a slightly different form from its previous incarnations.
“Frozen Dead Guy Days was canceled hours before the event in 2020, absolutely the right decision considering what we now know about COVID-19,” said Sarah Moseley Martin, a longtime volunteer who purchased 60% of the festival and took over as controlling partner last year. “The first few days, weeks, inevitably months after lockdown, we did our best to mitigate the tremendous financial impact, paid everyone who worked and even some — due to contractual agreements — who did not provide services.”
FDGD is vital to Nederland, as it brings an economic boom delivering the busiest weekend of the year during a time that would otherwise be incredibly slow.
FDGD Chillin Till 2022
Our hearts froze and were broken last year and we are presently missing the opportunity to celebrate with you all. Although restrictions are gradually being lifted, we did not feel we could throw FDGD in a safe, free-spirited fashion that is its essence. We have decided to officially postpone till 2022, hoping to bring back as many of the bands, vendors, sponsors, VIP’s and patrons planned for 2020 (canceled two days before the start)
While keeping an eye on restrictions and safety concerns, we are also looking into having a “Melt Down Get Down” one-day ice-breaker event, possibly in late summer Stay Tuned & Freeze on! merch/info www.frozendeadguydays.com
