Women’s Only Map and Compass / GPS Orientation Classes March 20th

March 20th @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am $5.00

Two Topics in One Day!

COFA, Christian Outdoor Fellowship of America, will be teaching the use of a Map and Compass as well as basic GPS skills on March 20th, 9:00 AM-11:30 AM.

Map and Compass

This class is designed to give you a basic understanding of how to use the map and compass. We all could use help in understanding how to use the GPS, right? Especially if you like hiking, camping, biking, hunting, and getting into the backwoods and mountains of Colorado.

We will cover the parts of a compass, declination (what in the world is that?), we will also learn how to triangulate on the map to find your exact location. We’ll even cover how to navigate to different locations. This class will use a topographical map so we will cover how to read them and what the different symbols are. Once we cover the map and compass, we’ll put the two together. Bring your compass if you have one! GPS inReach: In this class, you will learn the basics of using a Garmin handheld GPS. We will cover everything from turning it on to marking and using waypoints.

We will also cover the Garmin inReach GPS units. The inReach units can be used to send text messages and also call for help in emergency situations. Mike will share some stories, where the inReach was used to rescue people stranded in the outdoors. This is a must piece of gear everyone should carry when backpacking, hiking, camping, hunting, or spending anytime out in the wilderness.
Come join us for this fun and informative class. If you have a GPS unit at home feel free to bring it along (even if it’s not a Garmin GPS).

One of COFA’s own, Mike Langley, an avid outdoorsman for 37 years, will be teaching this class. While in the Air Force, Mike went through their survival school where he learned orienteering (the use of map and compass). Since then, the GPS system came out and he got “hooked” using them. Mike strongly believes that people need to know how to use these navigation tools if you get out into the field.
