Posted on: June 14, 2022

Park County, CO - Pollinator Week: Wings of Life, is an annual celebration in support of pollinator health that was initiated and is managed by Pollinator Partnership. The CSU Extension Office, Park County Community Garden and Master Gardeners invite Park County residents to participate in Pollinator Week, June 20 – June 26. Throughout the week, the Master Gardeners will help people discover interesting facts about pollinating flowering plants. The Master Gardeners are also sponsoring a Pollinator Coloring Contest and will conclude Pollinator Week by hosting activities at the Bailey Community Garden during the Bailey Days on June 25 and 26.

To participate, follow CSU Extension on Facebook where the Master Gardeners will be serving up pollinator facts throughout the week. You can also stop by any local library to learn more about pollinators and pick up a coloring sheet or download the printable (PDF) version. Once completed, coloring sheets can be turned back in to the library or at the Bailey Community Center Gardens during the Bailey Days celebration on June 25 and 26, where Master Gardeners will host special pollinator activities you can make and take home. Prizes for the coloring contest are sponsored by local businesses and will be awarded for each age group, including adults.

Pollination occurs when pollen is moved within flowers or carried from flower to flower by pollinating animals such as birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, beetles, or other animals, or by the wind. Pollinators are important to grow and protect because:
  • About 75% of all flowering plant species need the help of animals to move their heavy pollen grains from plant to plant for fertilization.
  • About 1,000 of all pollinators are vertebrates such as birds, bats, and small mammals.
  • Most pollinators (about 200,000 species) are beneficial insects such as flies, beetles, wasps, ants, butterflies, moths, and bees.
Other ways you can participate in Pollinator Week:
  • Reduce your impact. Reduce or eliminate your pesticide use, increase green spaces, and minimize urbanization.
  • Plant for pollinators. Create pollinator-friendly habitat with native flowering plants that supply pollinators with nectar, pollen, and room for nesting. For information on what to plant in your area, download a free eco-regional guide online at www.pollinator.org .
