JCSO Installs State-of-the-Art Equipment to Enhance Awareness of Severe Weather

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has contracted with WeatherSTEM to bring state-of-the-art weather stations to the county for more accurate forecasting of current and potentially dangerous weather conditions. The units are rated for 185 mph winds, solar-powered, and provide such data points as past, current and forecasted conditions, real-time temperatures, lightning strikes, barometric readings, rainfall rates, and wind speeds. All of this information makes for a safer Jefferson County and will aid emergency management officials in preparing for, and responding to, weather events.

“This equipment will be extremely valuable for monitoring severe weather and its impact on those who live, work and play in the county. This technology will increase our situational awareness in making critical decisions concerning adverse weather or wildfire conditions affecting our area,” said Emergency Management Director Halil Grieb.

The weather stations are being installed in four locations throughout the county. The designated locations are in Coal Creek Canyon, Alderfer/Three Sister Park in Evergreen, Meyers Ranch Park in Morrison and in Golden at the Jefferson County Campus. The weather stations fill existing gaps in current systems used by emergency management.

Citizens can also access the same data for things like rainfall, wind, humidity, heat index and other factors that might influence their work and leisure activities. This additional information will allow those who have to be, or plan to be, outdoors to make more informed decisions and stay safer.

Anyone can view the data here jefferson-co.weatherstem.com/.There is also a WeatherSTEM app available for both iOS and Android, where you can select the WeatherSTEM station(s) from which you would like to receive notifications and localized forecasts.
