Jefferson County Open Space will be conducting a public meeting to share plans and opportunities for improvement at Elk Meadow Park Open Space Park, Dog-Off Leash Area, south of Stagecoach Boulevard, on Monday, March 14, 2011, beginning at 7:15 p.m., at the Buchanan Recreation Center meeting room. The meeting will begin with a short presentation and will be followed with opportunities to discuss plans with Open Space staff. Tom Hoby, Director of Jefferson County Open Space said that "Elk Meadow Dog-Off Leash Area is an incredible public asset, enjoyed by many, and we want to create a more sustainable situation to ensure that the dog park is around for many years to come."
Historically, Elk Meadow Park has allowed off-leash dog training on the 107-acre, county-owned property south of Stagecoach Boulevard dating back to the early 1980s. The area was created when Evergreen resident Judi Quackenboss approached the County about creating an off-leash area to honor her late son, John. Open Space accommodated the request at this location using both public and private funds to create a one-acre fenced area and in 2005 the fenced area was expanded to five acres.
