Some people who drink water containing uranium in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer
and kidney toxicity.
Some people who drink water containing radium 226 or 228 in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of
getting cancer.
Certain minerals are radioactive and may emit forms of radiation known as photons and beta radiation. Some people who drink water
containing beta particle and photon radioactivity in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

Type - Category - Analyte - Compliance Period
MCL, AVERAGE - Maximum Contaminant Level Violation - COMBINED URANIUM - 01/01/2009 - 12/31/2009
MCL, AVERAGE - Maximum Contaminant Level Violation - GROSS ALPHA, EXCL. RADON & URANIUM - 01/01/2009 - 12/31/2009
Information About the Above Violation(s)
There are currently eight points at which water enters MWSD’s distribution system. Test results during 2009 indicated that water
entering the distribution system from the main storage tank continues to have elevated levels of uranium and gross alpha particle
activity. Radionuclide testing at four other entry points have indicated possible elevated gross alpha particle activity at various times.
Our system continues to be under an Enforcement Order from the State of Colorado for violation of radionuclide MCL’s. As noted in
prior Consumer Confidence Reports, MWSD is participating in a program offered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment (“CDPHE”), known as the Colorado Radionuclide Abatement and Disposal Strategy, (the “CO-RADS” program).
Participants in the program have received individualized hands-on compliance assistance, and preliminary engineering
recommendations for radionuclide treatment options and waste disposal. The consulting firm retained by the CDPHE to assist with
the CO-RADS program provided a report to MWSD in March of 2009. After evaluating the recommendations in the report, MWSD
retained the engineering consulting firm of AquaWorks, DBO, Inc. (“AquaWorks”), to design a water treatment system that will
remove uranium and other alpha radiation from the wells that supply water to the main storage tank. A “Drinking Water Construction
Application,” was submitted to the CDPHE in February of this year. MWSD and AquaWorks are currently waiting for a response
from the CDPHE staff. Additional pilot testing of the ion exchange media being recommended by AquaWorks will take place. Once
approval from the CDPHE is obtained, MWSD is prepared to proceed with construction. With regard to the water entering the
distribution system at the four other potentially problematic locations, MWSD has implemented a more sophisticated radionuclide
testing program as recommended by the CDPHE in an effort to conclusively resolve whether or not a violation of the MCL for
adjusted gross alpha particle activity is occurring.
