If you can hear the joint the damage is already done. Just put a reman. axle in and good to go.
Are you hearing joint grinding, or are you hearing it from the pad and rotor area? How soon did you notice it after you did the change? I've had the same problem before, and in just a couple days in the city, it did enough damage that they had to repace the joint. Up here, I'm betting the damage happens a lot sooner. Good luck, it's not cheap.
If it's OK, then keep an eye on the boot. Once ripped, it rips again easily.
I haven't had much car work done up here, but I've had nothing but good service and decent prices from Aspen Park, though last time I asked about something ,it seemed a bit high. Never hurts to comparison shop.
I can tell ya that on a subaru- once the boot cracks it starts to collect dirt as has been mentioned.
It's all down hill from there. The boots on a subaru will usually last more than 120,000 miles. On an all wheel drive, the transaxle can be good for 200K - but if that boot cracks it will collect dirt and ruin the knuckle joint in as little as 1000 miles.
Another poster has already posted the correct solution- just replace the entire axle - which comes with a new boot. In fact- you should probably just do them both and be done with it.
If you do not replace the axle- at least make sure that the joint is cleaned out completely- remove every speck of grease and dirt until completely clean and re-grease - or your joint will wear out quickly from the dirt that got into it.
I replace my own on my subaru- have done this work with 3 cars now over the years. It costs about 75 bucks per side - or about 150 bucks for a subaru. This usually needs to be done every 150,000- 170,000 miles or so on a subaru.
Just did mine last summer- I also went ahead and put in new bearings- new break pads and rotors - just about everything that moves in the front. I did all the labor myself.
