The dumbing of America

I just saw a brief segment about this study on some CNN money show. Basically they all sneered at it. Shame on them.

"Of all of the classes offered in high school, Algebra II is the leading predictor of college and work success, according to research that has launched a growing national movement to require it of graduates.

In recent years, 20 states and the District have moved to raise graduation requirements to include Algebra II, and its complexities are being demanded of more and more students."

When I was in high school, my guidance counselor told me that to do well in college, especially since I was planning on majoring in Biology, I needed, at minimum, Calculus I. I actually ended up taking that and Calculus II. Sneering at requiring Algebra II requirements speaks volumes on our crappy educational standards.

It seems to me that we were told that 4 years of math and 2 of a foreign language were minimum to to even bother applying to a college.

I should also caveat that all my memories from that decade are suspect.

Yup, that's what I had. Algebra I in 8th grade, Geometry in 9th, Algebra II in 10th, Cal I in 11th, and Calc II in 12th. I took French from 7-12th grade. I wish I'd taken German too though - I was afraid it'd be too hard! lol

We also were told we had to take 2 or 3 science classes (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), and at least 1 of music or art for college (to show we were "well-rounded").

I still struggled in college with my 2 calc courses there, even with the extra course beforehand in high school. Thank goodness for study groups and people smarter than me in math!

Wow, have I been out of touch! I knew that America had dumbed down, but I just thought it was politicians who pushed that, not the schools. No Algebra II? I did better in that than in Algebra I and Geometry put together in H.S. Managed to test completely out of college algebra because of the math I had in H.S. (of course, nobody told me at the time that I'd switch majors and have to take 3 calc's, diff eq, 2 vector classes, but I digress...) We also had to take a minimum of 2 years of a foreign language to graduate H.S.

One student in the article mentions that algebra is like a foreign language. Well, she's right. Math, and algebra in particular, is a language--the language of science, the language of engineering.

I'm really surprised that Maryland is among the states not requiring it. That state had some of the highest educational standards when I grew up there. Times changed, I guess.
