Girls now reaching puberty before 10 – a year sooner than 20

The latest generation of girls are reaching puberty before the age of 10, a new study suggests, raising fears they may also begin sexual activity earlier.

I would like to know why... I think hormones in meat and milk play a role.

Chemicals like BPA and it's relatives, like bisphenol AF are likely culprits:

Controversy Continues After Panel Rules on Bisphenol A

Since then, other scientists have reported low-dose effects in rodents. Some findings have raised alarms, such as an increase in chromosomal abnormalities in the eggs of mice, discovered after bisphenol A leached from plastic mouse cages (Science, 4 April 2003, p. 31). Epidemiology studies have linked bisphenol A and human health problems, such as breast cancer and early puberty.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

And doesn't it seem like girls now develop much faster too?

Could be... or it could just be cultural differences in dress and demeanor! I remember graduating high school and looking back at the kids there while I was in college and thinking "Man... I don't remember girls in my class dressing/acting like that!"

I mean, this is a chemical/physical change that we're talking about, but I also think a lot of the "look" that goes along with it is sociologically-driven... Even if they weren't maturing earlier, they may still appear to develop faster.

You are probably right. If a girl is well endowed but dresses modestly they don't stand out as much as someone in a micro mini and tube top.

I remember when they said that it used to be one girl reaching menses in 4th grade and then it was 3 girls. I believe that was in the 70's or 80's. I know my son started growing underarm hair in 5th grade and had his first wet dream then.

I don't like how the kids dress so sexily now, either. My son is a counselor at a Quaker school and the girls cannot show cleavage. They look nice.

I definitely know I wasn't a sexy dresser: It was Peter Pan collars, skirts that were below the knee.

I watched Karate Kid and even though that was in the late 70's/early 80's (I guess) they looked more wholesome than the girls today.

Of course, I laugh at the boys with their hair swept forward and in their eyes. Always trying to be different, yet ending up the same.

I hate to be a stick in the mud, but 10 is 10 years sooner than 20.
