The actual value of the sum of all real property in Park County dropped by 6.8 percent between June 30, 2008, and June 30, 2010, according to information from the Park County Assessor's Office. Details in this week's Flume.
It's obviously dropping in Jefferson County too... I just received my property valuation statement a few days ago, and for the first time in the 20+ years that I've been here, my value went down... (In my case that's a good thing, because I have no intention of selling, and that should mean less property taxes for the next year.)
I have to agree. Lower property values are mostly hurting people who are either trying to sell their homes because they MUST move or folks who are trying to use the equity of their home to borrow. I'm confident that in time this storm will blow over and the value of our homes will increase...at least modestly. Historically it seems that eventually the value of real estate, like the stock market, continues to grow.
I know the current situation stinks for folks who have to sell and with an increase in interest rates looming this will only get tougher (I'm sorry for your trouble), but for those who are here for the long run we may as well enjoy paying less taxes for a while. Isn't that what most want?
We are not moving and ours have been over valued for years. When we added sheds (tough shed type) to the property they said it increased our value $7000.00 what a crock did not even pay that much for the two sheds that were added.
Sadly I never had the time or energy to fight it and since our taxes are so much lower than Jeffco (where we lived for 10 years) just went with it.
Ours dropped pretty big time but since we are not moving and we over paid for years I figure that maybe for at least a year we get something back.

So my mom lives further up from VL. Can she use the same argument on her assessment?
