What other alternative exists for the likes of a Vaughn Orrin?

Yes, but solitary without TV? It is torture and they are usually mentally ill. Increasingly, many who would have been in mental hospitals are put in prison. This is wrong! You can protect yourself without abuse. I think those guards get so used to this that they don't think critically.

Is it more or less humane to expose them to the changing world when their own will never change? Is it humane to let them see, day after day after day, a life that can never be theirs? Is it humane to let them see repeatedly the freedom and liberty they have lost for the rest of their existence as a consequence of their actions?

If you had seen this program, to lock someone up in glass with nothing is,,,,,, I can't even come up with the word. It is the job of the officials to give them something to keep them calm. If I see the program again I will post it.

I have no sympathy for serial killers. They should not have been locked up - they should have been shot.

I don't believe in torturing someone for the rest of their lives to such an extreme. I believe in keeping them away from the public.

They are mostly mentally ill.

Comparing the poor North Koreans who are sentenced to inhumane gulags for simple dissent to murderers, rapists, & pedophiles is simply wrong.

We really don't know why the people in North Korea are locked up and that is horrible too. They are separate issues but wanted to point out some problems in our own prisons as well. I am not comparing.

CinnamonGirl wrote: No offense but our prisons have their own problems. I watched a program (I cannot remember if it was the history/science channel or MSNBC) but in our supermax prisons we put people in confinement for years with no contact and it drives them crazy. That is cruel and unusual.I will try to find the program. I strongly believe that prisons are not to torture people they already have lost their freedom.
Sometimes it becomes about power.

So, Save the money to keep the bastards alive, and off them!
For those on Death Row with no chance of parole.
Wait I think I way re-think my idea of just offing them (Thanks to your remakes), Offing them will ease them of the pain, that they endure being locked up, hmmm... Thanks...

A little off -topic but you made me think of our prison system... (Not the innocents that are thrown in prisons round the world.)

Of course, they would get they're 3 squares a day, but maybe we should look at cutting the cost and callories. They get Rec. Time, so maybe less sports equipment to save money, NO Sports equipment, just make them run, walk around in circles, NO weight sets cost is to high.
NO TV at all why should they know what's happening outside their walls, OK, I'll give them Friday night movie rights, but ONLY Disney movies.
Liquid soap ONLY, don't want any bars to fall in the showers.
SOLAR Panels on the roofs, why has anybody thought of that?
Bring back the BALL & CHAIN, for those being nasty to others, and no Movie night a TIME-OUT so to speak.

I Think I'm starting to like your thoughts "prisons are not to torture people they already have lost their freedom" after all they only killed, raped, or whatever landed them there and the survivors of the loved ones that will NEVER be seen again, hugged again, kissed again, have to be TORTURED the rest of their lives, seems like JUSTICE!
O did I mention NO VISITORS...

More thought needed... More cost cutting thoughts needed...

Let's go Dirty Dozen! Throw those in solitary confinement out of C-130's over North Korea to free the gulag prisoners! That would be interesting viewing.

Better let's throw the liberals over there and let them TALK them into letting them go.

I have a feeling it may work, the government would be pulling they're hair out and saying "FINE! take'em" I can't take this BS anymore!!!! Just STHU!!!!!
