The education dept has an armed law enforcement arm. Who knew? I didn't.

"The guns are to replace old firearms used by Education’s Office of Inspector General, which is the law enforcement arm of the department.

Here’s a statement from the office in response to a question about why need 27 shotguns with a 14-inch barrels:

“The Office of Inspector General is the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Department of Education and is responsible for the detection of waste, fraud, abuse, and other criminal activity involving Federal education funds, programs, and operations. As such, OIG operates with full statutory law enforcement authority, which includes conducting search warrants, making arrests, and carrying firearms. The acquisition of these firearms is necessary to replace older and mechanically malfunctioning firearms, and in compliance with Federal procurement requirements. For more information on OIG’s law enforcement authority, please visit their Web site at : www.ed.gov/oig

Ah, now it all makes sense. I guess they could not use their own swat team because their own shotguns could
malfunction.

ABC affiliate Sacramento News 10 reports that a father was dragged from his Stockton, California home and handcuffed in front of his children by a SWAT team looking for his estranged wife to collect her unpaid student loans. Kenneth Wright and his children were fast asleep early Tuesday morning when a police SWAT team kicked in his front door, arrested Wright, dragging him from his front porch, handcuffed and leading him to a police car with his three children. Wright told reporters he was then detained for six hours while officers looked for his wife – who no longer lives at the house.

Mr Wright was later told by Stockton police that the order to send in the SWAT team came from The U.S. Department of Education who were looking for his estranged wife to collect defaulted loan payments.
Speaking to ABC News 10, a visibly shaken Mr Wright described what happened when he was woken by a banging on his front door.

I was going to ask if you had to dust the first story off before you posted it too.

But I do agree with the idea that too many branches of goverment are arming themselves, even the agriculture bureau, establishing multiple armed divisions of goverment bureaus was a trick both Stalin and Hitler used.

No you won't, the government is arming not only itself but private companies it hires just in case the people that have had enough need some correction.

I can see it now - OIG shows up with shotguns in-hand to discuss someone's student loan payment status......

Since Department of Education also funds libraries - maybe it's to help OIG recover overdue items......

Date line on the story is the 8th of June 2011 and the first paragraph indicates that it happened on Tuesday, which would have been the 7th of June 2011. Perhaps they are simply continuing to conduct their business in the same manner as they were a couple of years ago despite its inappropriateness?
