Official Calls For Riverside, 12 Other Counties To Secede From California

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone apparently thinks so, after proposing that the county lead a campaign for as many as 13 Southern California counties to secede from the state.

Stone said in a statement late Thursday that Riverside, Imperial, San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono counties should form the new state of South California.

The creation of the new state would allow officials to focus on securing borders, balancing budgets, improving schools and creating a vibrant economy, he said.

“Our taxes are too high, our schools don’t educate our children well enough, unions and other special interests have more clout in the Legislature than the general public,” Stone said in his statement.

So what do you think of dividing California into two states with a South California like South Carolina or South Dakota? That way those counties can actually defend the border, spend less and tax less, focus more on a better education system, and be more fiscally responsible like they want to.

There has been a movement to split California into two states for a long time now... This is nothing new. It might be a different group of counties or the proposed border might be different but the argument is still the same. I dont see it going very far.

OK, but how do people feel about this? Should part of a state that is much different politically and geographically, and who has totally different ideas at running that part of the state rather than continue to go down the bankrupt path, be able to vote themselves into a new state?

Being from Carmel about 150 years ago... I'll just say that those of us from the northern part of the state seldom claimed the southern portion. Two different worlds really. Well, if you don't count Oakland. Can Oakland go south too?

It is not a new idea and honestly, maybe it's time. Not for "protecting" the borders, you all know I think we ought to remove all fencing north and south and become one big happy union. I like utopian thought though. :)
