Democrat Janice Hahn defeats Tea Party-backed Craig Huey in California special election
Los Angeles city councilwoman wins House seat; Republicans were hoping for upset that would send a message ahead of 2012 national elections
LOS ANGELES — Democrat Janice Hahn defeated Republican Craig Huey in a bitter contest for a Southern California House seat Tuesday, preserving the party's hold on the district and surviving an unusually tough race in a Democratic stronghold.
With 100 precincts reporting, Hahn, a Los Angeles city councilwoman, had 41,585 votes, or about 55 percent, to 34,636, or about 45 percent, for Huey. Huey's campaign had Tea Party backing.
The campaign was being closely watched by both major parties as a sign of whether normally safe Democratic seats have been left vulnerable by the persistent economic slump.
With a light turnout and widespread voter anxiety over the economy, Republicans were hoping for an upset that would send a message heading toward the 2012 national elections, in which President Barack Obama will seek a second term.
Alan Grayson 2012: Former Congressman Announces He's Running Again
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Former U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson who made a name for himself during his two years in Congress with a fiery floor speech attacking the Republican health care plan says he's running again.
The Orlando, Fla., Democrat said of the plan in 2009: "If you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: Die quickly."
He says he filed paperwork with the state Monday to make another run for the U.S. House in 2012. After his single term, he was defeated in 2010 by Republican Dan Webster.
Grayson also ran a campaign ad referring to Webster as "Taliban Dan," comparing Webster's religious fundamentalist views to those in the Middle East.

Russell Pearce Recall Election Date Announced By Jan Brewer
PHOENIX -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has announced a Nov. 8 recall election for the leader of the state Senate who was the chief sponsor of the state's controversial legislation against illegal immigration.
Brewer's action Tuesday was expected because elections officials certified last week that opponents of Senate President Russell Pearce had collected enough signatures to force the recall election.
Pearce is best known for sponsoring immigration measures, including the 2010 enforcement law known as SB1070. A judge has placed key provisions of that measure on hold while they're challenged in federal court.
