Just an idea I read in an opinion piece I thought was intriguing.
Offer temporary (next two years) early paid-in Medicare to 63 and 64 year-olds as an incentive to retire early, thereby opening up more jobs for the unemployed. Maybe have them buy into medicare until age 65 at $300-400/month so as not to burden medicare financing. At 65 the rates go to normal.
Anyone think this would work? Doesn't create new jobs, just opens up existing jobs.
I knew a guy at work a couple years ago that delayed his retirement. Then the company offered a buyout incentive before the big layoffs and he took it.
I think many would retire at 63-64 if they could get on Medicare sooner. I know with Obamacare they will get some help too, but that isn't until 2014.
Anyway, thought it was interesting, haven't heard any politicians talking any ideas.

Good point. The way things are going now I know more and more seniors who are working as long as they can. We have people working at 68 and 67 at my company.
I have a opportunity to retire early, very early, but won't take it because I know how expensive health insurance would be for me and my wife. so I am essentially just working for the health care discount.

Thanks to the few that replied. I am interested in hearing any more "outside the box" ideas you may have.
I think this lower medicare age sounds like a possible winner. It goes against the grain, but it has some positives. 60-64 age group is more healthy than 70-90 yo. Medicare cost is about 12,000/year or 1000/mo average. So let the 60-64 age group in for say $500/mo. It would probably add net money to medicare (wider risk pool) and free up jobs. And they could still work part time doing something if they choose.
Any other ideas? I have some self-employment and telecommute ideas too.
As you may have guessed already, I am sick and tired of the same ol demagogue copy and paste outrage posts that accomplish nothing. Please skip this topic and move on if you want to go there.

Not so outside the box....the idea of allowing younger people to buy into medicare has been around for a while, On another thread I mentioned that I knew people who delayed retirement so they could keep their benefits till their spouse reached 65 and qualified for medicare....I was told that rarely happens, I disagree, I think that happens a lot, and I also think there are many who would retire before 65 if there was reasonable cost health insurance available......as it is now, a 60+ person looking to buy their own plan, if they even can qualify, is looking at nearly $1000/month to equal what most employers provide. That will cut into anyone's retirement income. Opening up those jobs to younger employees can only be a good thing...
