During the war- meat was rationed to 1 lb per week per person.
Sugar and other basics were also rationed. They started making electric wire for houses out of aluminum because all the copper went to the war effort. Tires were impossible to find for cars because the war needed all the tires.
People were encouraged to plant gardens for food- they did the same thing in England- they were called victory gardens.
Given today's economic condition, I'd say the advice in the first ad is also applicable today, except for the "pay taxes willingly" part.
