I think the deal has been cut and they are waiting until the last possible second to give everyone onvolved air cover. Unfortunately any solution that has a chance of working will be wildly unpopular with each party's base.
I'm not so sure, I think the Republcans are just scared enough of their tea party bosses that they may let us go into default rather than face their wrath.
I just wonder what level of self-loathing must exist for people to want to totally trash the infrastructure that has taken us from a raw frontier country 100 years or so ago to a modern civilized nation.

It boggles the mind.
Some wonder the same thing about the people who want to shackle generations of unborn Americans under a mountain of debt.

The lovey dubby "Let's help everyone in need because they need us" attitude hasn't helped matters over the years to boot. You don't think all the overblown social assistance and tax breaks for deadbeats has had any effect on anything? Anyone? And how bout feeding other countries thousands of tons of our grain and produce? No effect? Then there's the fact that over thirty percent of the populace doesn't pay any taxes because it's deemed they "don't make enough money." I put it simply. I don't need sh*tloads of links to articles and left or right leaning people to back this up. It's common flippin' sense. One of the main issues with all of these assistance stand points is that a lot of people were raised to believe that it was a fact of life, that there was no reason to object to forcibly taking money from someone busting their ass and giving it to someone else doing nothing. Then, it's okay for that person to have kids?! What's it gonna take for people to realize that we can't keep supporting people that sit on their couch for years at a time? The resources are gone, what now? Oh, just throw some more money at it, more money at it, more money at it. Harsh decisions are getting rid of all the anchor folks. That won't happen though because there's hardly a soul on here that could imagine denying someone necessities to keep living on the dole of everyone else....because they could DIE!?!?!?!?! THAT'S SO INHUMANE!!!!!!
Edit: And because this has pissed me off to no end. If you don't like "the big ole evil corporations," then don't you dare get gas anywhere, ride a horse. Don't shop at the grocery store, grow your own and shoot your meat. Don't purchase power from Xcel or anyone, generate it yourself. Get the picture? STFU.
The spin I am hearing is the cuts Obama are offering are so far in the future, they can be easily taken back, The Repubs would like immediate cuts to spending.
"No dime left behind" We will take every dime from your children to pay off this debt.
LJ,
You need better sources on your SS info. How many workers do we have for current SS recipinets, 3:1? What happens when it becomes 2:1 or 1:1?
And there is no Social Security lockbox, the money from the past collections has been buying up US debt, and if the US defaults, the SS won't have it.
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
The CBO is my source... And that's sufficient... Since you are obviously relying on all the b.s. sources from your rightie blogs, I'll take mine over yours any day...
It's solvent for the next 26-27 years, and that's with all of the demographic projections factored in.
This sociopathic insanity on the Right isn't about solvency...It's about dismantling the social safety nets that have been in place for over 70 years, and that has stuck in the craw of the Righties ever since. The Reagan-myth of the "Welfare Queen" is fabrication, and for the 1-2% of the cheats and slackers, you sociopaths would screw the rest of America. You disgust me.

But if we raised the taxes on the rich... all those piles of money in that visualization would disappear in no time. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
To be fair LJ, I don't think the conservatives have much of a choice....they have been indoctrinated for decades to believe that SS is a ponzi scheme and welfare, medicare, and unemployment insurance are just there for the lazy and the deadbeats......they believe it to their very core and no amount of education, logic, or reason will change those long held mistaken beliefs, even if they know, deep down, that they have been sold a bill of goods by their leaders. We do have a spending problem, and the easiest places to cut are those services to the very people who don't hold the power and influence in this country, the middle class, the elderly and the poor. They don't dare touch the wealthy, the corporations, or those perks that keep the powerful in power, and in turn support the conservative agenda.
