The Party That Can’t Say Yes

And the fact that they DON'T MAKE ENOUGH MONEY to do so, and the other forms of taxes they DO PAY, including Social Security and Medicare Payroll taxes (among others) was clearly stated.

So, if you are honest and state "federal income tax", then it's a somewhat true statement, but dishonestly spun... But to say "They don't pay taxes"...is the usual utter bullsh*t of the dishonest Right.

No Ms. Derp... if you state "federal income tax" then it's an absolutely true statement... nothing somewhat about it. And those 50 percent who do work and do pull in some sort of income should pay something... not nothing. I'll gladly go along with adjusting the tax level for people making over a million dollars... as soon as EVERYONE who generates an income pays something.

Well, now that we've established Tom Coburn is a more accurate source than LJ, we can move on.

While people should add "federal income" when they mention what people pay in taxes, they don't always and you can infer that's what they are talking about. We all know people pay other taxes as well. Duh.

And while I respect the Tax Policy Center, I think their wording that some don't make enough to pay federal income tax is misleading. If you eliminated exemptions, deductions, and credits, then eveyone who has income would be subject to at least a 10% federal income tax. There is no minimum income in order to be taxed. If someone says there is, they are really talking about the effect of the exemptions, deductions, and credits.

Which doesn't change the meaning of what I posted...And shows that the statement that "50% of the population don't pay any taxes" is a lie.

Thank you for verifying what I said.

The only one in this thread who had made that statement is you.

The original statement by FH said "income taxes", not just "taxes". You later misquoted him.

..OR, he went back and changed what was there... (BearMtn does it all the time....)

Either way, it's an oft-quoted accusation, and as it stands, it's a lie.

Thank you for verifying what I posted.

If you make below 18k you pay nothing and you don't have to file.

But are SS payments taxes or mandatory donations on a retirement plan?
They can be described both ways.

I don't think you got my point.

Yes, a married couple can make $18k (it's actually $19k in 2011, $9500 for singles) and pay no taxes. But that is because they each get a $3700 exemption and a $11,600 standard deduction which they can subtract from their adjust gross income. If they make $19k, their taxable income would be $0.

My point was that the reason they owe nothing is because of the exemptions and the standard deduction. It's not because there is some amount of income which is not taxed.
