So, this is funny but really you wonder why we (communities bound) are different.

LOL Most of us simply do not think along the lines of gathering personal information. They have indeed hit a gold mine. Forums like this one do not collect the same kind of information as fb, but if one receives the attention of the CIA, then a review of one's posts can certainly be revealing.

I don't do facebook -- got tired of pretending anyone gives a damn.

Sure you do, SC - you have emails, and birthdays. Volunatrily given, but they are collected as part of sign up for the site. Pretty standard as well. And all voluntary.

But you can lie about any of that. Yes you can on FB too but your given name is the important part. And only emails, are asked for here only for communications with us only they are not public unless you want them to be. You know what the real issue is? Even though you "think" you can keep it private. The privacy settings are so confusing. You can get info on someone even if you think you settings are on private on FB. Because of 'friends of friends' can see info. You have to really do your research to keep your info safe. And even then some of what you say may be seen by mutual friends. It takes alot of time to figure out, even if you can. (Sort of like the PC TOS.)

All I am saying is FB encourages you to give them as much as possible. We don't and it is deliberate. I am really not trying to knock FB. Just showing the differences and why we are careful about personal info. I know you may think I am biased but I truly believe all this and take it seriously.

No we don't. Email and IP is all we have. You can easily come on here and be very anonymous. I suppose you could use the argument that you can add your email, web address, birthday etc. But that is so voluntary and few even know it is available.

It is not encouraged. I think that is where FB has the problem. And the friends seeing other friends info is where their privacy problems start. Their chains of personal info is set up to break privacy and spread.
