I finally bought the movie. On Glenn Beck's last day on Fox, Olbermann shared why he always called him Glen "lonesome rhodes" beck. It was this movie and the role that Andy Griffith played. Amazing role played by Andy Griffith. 1957 release. Cast also includes Patricia Neal and Walter Matthau
It is a very good movie and I can totally see how Olbermann was calling Glen Beck - Lonesome Rhodes Beck. The last lines of the movie delivered by Walter Matthau ring perfectly true with what happened with Glenn Beck and his audience. It just shows that not much changes over time.
Lee Remick made her film debut in the movie as the baton twirling Betty Lou
I found a couple of relevant clips on YouTube from the movie... I can see why Olbermann called him "Lonesome Roads"... I've ordered a copy of the movie from Amazon... It will bear watching from start-to-finish.
What's interesting is that it was no doubt supposed to be like "Manchurian Candidate" and scare you and wake you up to the fanaticism of the time...And nowadays, there are the folks who will look at it and NOT "get the joke."
I didn't see so much as that as how easily the mass can be "told what to think and do" and what some that use their ability to influence do with that fact. and how the power of knowing how much you can influence eventually leads to your destruction once it is found out how you truly feel about "the sheep that can't think for themselves". I did not see as a movie to scare you, just very good study of human nature
