I read about this and it is very disturbing, but not surprising. I have no doubt that in the case of civil unrest (of whatever cause) our government would do things like the governments in the middle east have done to prevent citizens from communicating. Including shutting down the internet.
Let's get past the b.s. that somehow the "gubmint" (i.e., the Feds, or the State) had anything to do with it. This was a decision by BART and the City/County of San Francisco. And frankly, I'm outraged, and I think it's way over the line. On the other hand providing cell service down in the underground BART tunnels is a "service" that BART provides through the carriers. If BART didn't provide it, it wouldn't exist at all because cell signals don't work underground. A good lawyer could make a case that it's BART's decision on whether or not to provide the service...and when...
Personally, I disagree with that, and I do see it as a 'freedom of assembly" issue...But I know what they are going to say...
Personally I haven't decided how I feel about this issue. I would prefer not to be attacked by flash mobs when I am on light rail, but it sounds like the demonstrators have grounds to rally because of BART security's brutal methods.
