Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich has published an essay this week, in which he’s calling for American workers to organize protest marches rather than ordinary parades for Labor Day. The reason is that corporations and wealthy individuals have been making themselves richer by taking away from the income of working Americans.
Reich cites a couple of startling statistics. First, there’s private sector wage gains. In the “worst decade for American workers in a century”, private sector wage gains have been a percent below what took place even during the Great Depression.
Why aren’t workers’ wages in the private sector increasing? It isn’t because corporations aren’t making enough profits. “The ratio of corporate profits to wages is now higher than at any time since just before the Great Depression.”
A good deal of this problem can be blamed on George W. Bush – but not all of it. Over and over again, Barack Obama has worked to perpetuate the Bush agenda, helping Republicans continue their trickle down disaster, redistributing wealth from workers to the corporate elites.
Unlike many Democrats, Robert Reich doesn’t deny the problems with Obama, just in order to show partsian loyalty. Reich notes that “the President seems unwilling or unable to take on labor-bashing Republicans.”
On September 7 and 8, Reich will be speaking in Iowa. Wouldn’t it be great if, during those speeches, Reich announced that he would run a progressive economic primary challenge to Barack Obama in 2012? Robert Reich for President in 2012 is definitely something I’d put my support behind.
RT: This is the funniest thing I have ever read. Still blaming Bush. Many of the liberal tilted companies are sending jobs overseas and paying extraordinary wages to their corporate executives....but no outrage by the left.
Hey..I hate Obama. He's bought and paid for by banking interests- just like the rest, but I'm not gonna vote for any of the human garbage you got running.
