And BTW, I find it pretty amusing that the government's FEMA website recommends many of the things the FBI is looking for in "preppers": waterproof matches, flashlights, cash, food. Of course they don't list gas masks or firearms or ammo - can't have that now, can we?

The CDC lists a gas mask as an item to have.
So once again you have government agencies NOT on the same page.

Over the weekend, I was skeptical this notice was real - so I looked up the grant ID.

There is, in fact, a grant for "Communities Against Terrorism" that publishes "industry specific" flyers:

Communities Against Terrorism

The Communities Against Terrorism (CAT) program is predicated on the theory that nearly all acts of terror are preceded by discernible behavior and activity that will bring members of terror cells into contact with service providers and neighborhood businesses. Following analysis of previous foreign and domestic acts of terror, CAT outlines potential indicators of terrorism for various industries and offers templates of industry-specific fliers designed for distribution to businesses. The fliers can be customized with contact information for the local law enforcement agency. Accompanying tutorials prepare officers to work with the community, and an automated presentation outlines the program.

The flyers are distributed through slatt.org (you cannot access the site unless you identify yourself).

There's flyers for hotels, gun shops, and beauty suuply distributors (to name a few).

Having an abundance of hydrogen peroxide from a beauty supply can instantly put someone on a "list". And yet ironically we fall back into the same category of hobbyist usage... hydrogen peroxide is quite useful for cleaning soft tissue from bone when preparing European style mounts and various taxidermy.

It all boils back down to "intent" of use. Admittedly a guy with the right knowledge can easily use his 'hobby' supplies in a very different manner to cause/create a VERY bad day for others, but "capability" still does not equate "terrorism".

Case in point, many of us on here have firearms, thus giving us the 'capability' to rob a convenience store at the very least, does that mean we're going to knock off a 7-11 anytime soon? Government scare tactics and/or boredom in my personal opinion. Its like putting up a fence declaring private property, it just keeps the honest people honest.

"Why would the average consumer need a gas mask?" Living where we do here, in areas where forest fires can be a real bother, and the fact that smoke inhalation from fires is often more deadly than the heat/fire itself.... suddenly starts to make a whole lot more sense doesn't it? Personally I like to let everyone else think I'm some nutcase survivalist preparing for a zombie apocalypse that I know will never take place, and yet surprise the ever loving hell out them with ability and skill set when/if a natural disaster occurs. Wouldn't be the first time.
