In Michigan, food stamps are worth double at farmers' markets

Fresh produce awaits shoppers at the Van Houtte Farms stand at the Royal Oak Farmers Market in Royal Oak, Mich. A program called Double Up Food Bucks lets residents in nutritional assistance programs buy twice as much fresh food as they could have before.

I actually like this idea. Too bad the only think left at the market is Rocky Ford canteloupe.

SS - I went this past weekend and there was a ton of stuff! At least here, don't know about Michigan.

I've heard about something like this being implemented in Philadelphia too - great idea! Support local farmers/economy, reduce shipping pollution, and get people healthier food to eat at a better price than the grocery store.

I was just kidding! The farmer markets are still going strong in Arvada too.

And this program is a welcome change from the new trend to let urban people use food stamps to buy fast food. Yum Inc wants a piece of all those new food stamp recipients since Obama was elected. 1/6 of all Americans.
