"Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492, as an official holiday."
Nor is it on Mirco soft calendar, (today or the 12th), Nor on Your Corperate calendar, But ONE of your representatives calendars, They have BOTH Columbus Day today OBSEVERED, and the 12th Traditional. They'll get a discount next order!
Columbus day is no longer a politically correct holiday. Of course you don't see the government workers giving it up and going back to work - they'll keep it and so will the bankers.
But just try to celebrate it- your liable to be protested and called a racist murderer, even though Columbus never set foot on any land that belongs to any state in the USA.
Since 1909 in Denver- Italian Americans have celebrated Columbus Day in Denver, the City even allowed free parking meters for all those years - but no more. Several years ago the City Council met in the middle of the night and removed all the free parking and other benefits of Columbus Day and assigned them to Martin Luther King day. They even forgot to notify the media that year and thousands of people assumed that parking was free downtown. The city also sent out as many police as possible to write parking tickets to all the offenders.
This is the low handed despicable way the City of Denver respects the Italian community - many Italian Americans helped to build the City in the old days. But alas- they are no longer the "in crowd" minority these days. So out with the Italian Americans and in with the blacks and illegal hispanics. They are the minority De jour, tomorrow- who knows, maybe it'll be the Ismalists who get to park for free on mohammed's birthday.
I shop outside the Denver limits unless I have no other choice- I vote with my dollars.

That yellow paper under your windshield wiper on Monday wasn't a Happy Columbus Day card from Denver's parking control agents
It was a $15 parking ticket.
Columbus Day isn't a city holiday, but that didn't stop several media outlets from saying on their morning newscasts that on-street parking downtown was free.
This is the first year that Denver eliminated free parking on Columbus Day. It was voted out last September. The city council substituted Martin Luther King Day as a free parking meter day.
(The Denver Post erroneously reported the same year that parking was free on Columbus Day. They have since removed the article from their archives)
