'Fast and Furious' Was Plot Against Second Amendment

The government-sanctioned gunrunning operation, Fast and Furious, was a plot to undermine Second Amendment rights in the United States, National Rifle Association president Wayne LaPierre charged on Friday in an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV.

“It’s the only thing that makes any sense,” LaPierre said. “Over a period of two or three years they were running thousands and thousands of guns to the most evil people on earth. At the same time they were yelling ’90 per cent… of the guns the Mexican drug cartels are using come from the United States.’

I thought that from the very beginning. I remember Ms Clinton claiming guns from the US were arming the Mexican drug gangs long before Fast and Furious came to light.

To deflect attention from this scandal, the Obama administration has resurrected the plot from last June to blow up a resturant to assassinate a Saudi ambassador.

Yeah, it was a pretty dumb idea... Too bad the Bush administration thought of it, and implemented it first.

Justice Department Investigating Bush Administration Program Similar To 'Fast And Furious'

WASHINGTON — A second Bush administration gun-trafficking investigation has surfaced using the same controversial tactic for which congressional Republicans have been criticizing the Obama administration.

The tactic, called "gun walking," is already under investigation by the Justice Department's inspector general and by congressional Republicans, who have criticized the administration of Democratic President Barack Obama for letting it happen in an operation called "Fast and Furious".

Emails obtained by The Associated Press show how in a 2007 investigation in Phoenix, agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – depending on Mexican authorities to follow up – let guns "walk" across the border in an effort to identify higher-ups in gun networks. Justice Department policy has long required that illicit arms shipments be intercepted whenever possible.

The 2007 probe operated out of the same ATF office that more recently ran the flawed Operation Fast and Furious. Both probes resulted in weapons disappearing across the border into Mexico, according to the emails. The 2007 probe was relatively small – involving over 200 weapons, just a dozen of which ended up in Mexico as a result of gun-walking. Fast and Furious involved over 2,000 weapons, some 1,400 of which have not been recovered and an unknown number of which wound up in Mexico.

A sane person’s guide to ‘Fast and Furious’

For those not deeply entrenched in far-right conspiracy theories, let’s begin with the basics. “Fast and Furious” was an undercover operation launched out of Phoenix in 2009 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The investigation attempted to trace 1,500 to 2,000 firearms as they were purchased here in the United States by agents of Mexican drug cartels and then smuggled across the border. The ATF’s aim was to use that information to prosecute, disarm and break the cartels.

But things went very, very wrong.

ATF agents lost track of the guns. Two AK-47s involved in the investigation were recovered later at the scene of a murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Other weapons lost in the operation have clearly made their way into the hands of the cartels and have been used in violent crimes in Mexico.

In the aftermath of the botched operation, the U.S. attorney in Arizona and the acting ATF head have both been removed. The inspector general of the Justice Department has launched an internal investigation and U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has held hearings and subpoenaed thousands of emails and other documents from the ATF, the Justice Department and even the White House.

Through his probe, Issa is clearly hoping to establish that top Obama administration officials were deeply involved in the scandal, a suggestion that so far he has been unable to document. Instead of being an invention of the Obama administration, for example, it turns out Operation Fast and Furious was an offshot of similar operations carried out by the ATF as far back as 2006, under the Bush administration.

In his defense, Lindsay pointed to a fact-check story that declared Obama wrong in saying the program predated him. It highlights that the guarantee signed off on by the Obama administration had been added to a section of the 2005 law that was amended by the 2009 stimulus bill, which was passed by Democrats. The Solyndra project was shifted to the stimulus bill in 2009, along with the other Bush administration alternative energy projects, when the loan program was expanded. However, Solyndra's original loan guarantees were in fact first offered by the Bush administration -- and reported on -- in 2008.

The flow of firearms across the U.S. border is a serious challenge. So far, some 65,000 guns confiscated in Mexico by authorities have been traced back to gun purchases made here in the United States. One single individual tracked during the Fast and Furious investigation bought more than 700 weapons for transfer to the Mexican cartels, in some cases purchasing 20 or more AK-47-type assault weapons in a single purchase.

However, when the Obama administration proposed a new regulation that would require border-state gun shops to notify officials if a single individual attempted to buy large numbers of guns, the NRA protested bitterly.

“This is just a shallow excuse to engage in a sweeping firearms registration scheme,” LaPierre wrote on the NRA’s website. At the NRA’s insistence, the House passed a resolution opposing that regulation, and the NRA has since filed suit against the rule.

The truth is, the right has fixated on “Fast and Furious” not because it wants the federal government to become more effective in its efforts to stop gunrunning across the Mexican border. Quite the contrary. It wants to raise such a stink about “Fast and Furious” that the government is forced to stop undercover gun-trafficking investigations altogether. They see this as an opportunity to discredit and handcuff ATF, an agency that the NRA and others view as a hated enemy.

Yeah, too bad the NRA is against allowing large gun purchases near the Mexican border to be tracked. They'd rather see them go to the drug cartels undetected. The people "running thousands and thousands of guns to the most evil people on earth" shouldn't be tracked, according to the NRA, because they have a Second Amendment right to buy and sell them to whomever they want.

The NRA is playing you for fools and you're not even smart enough to realize it.
