by Tom McGregor Sat, Oct 15, 2011, 09:47 PMMitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, comes from a state where a school has banned the Thanksgiving holiday and forbids children from wearing costumes on Halloween on the grounds that these celebrations should be deemed politically incorrect.
Fox News reports that, “Anne Foley, the principal of Kennedy Schoolin Somervile, Mass., sent an email to teachers warning about celebrating Thanksgiving, the Boston Herald reported.”
Ms. Foley wrote, “when we were young we might have been able to claim ignorance of the atrocities that Christopher Columbus committed against the indigenous people.”
She added, “we can no longer do so. For many of us and our students celebrating this particular person is an insult and a slight to the people he annihilated. On the same lines we need to be careful around the Thanksgiving Day time as well.”
I didn't realize principals have the power to do this.
I'll wait 3 days for the truth to come out on what was actually said. The fact that it says "Fox News reports...." is enough to assume that something has been taken out of context and whipped up into the maximum amount of hysteria to whip up the fringe on the right. (Of course, they aren't upset about Halloween, since that involves witchcraft and stuff, which sends the "family values" types over the edge...)
I'm not sure what ties Columbus has to Thanksgiving, although in the comments on the link posted it states that Canada celebrates 'Thanksgiving' on or around Columbus Day in the States....
Thanksgiving is still a federal holiday, not sure a school can 'ban' it.
I would imagine the Principal would prefer the holiday not be mentioned in school during the week.
Surprised they don't use the day to emphasize how the Native Americans helped out the religious seperatists who were fleeing a corrupt religion. Sounds like it is hitting politically correct talking points.
