My thoughts:

In primary season - the two political sides tend to pull to extreme.
This is a completely normal pattern.

My sense - not really provable or refutable - is that the polarities are getting more polar.

I'm seriously wondering if we're not going to arrive at an impasse, eventually.

You are probably right that the far right and far left are getting more and more rabid, but I think the center is still looking for change and I predict Romney will do well in the primaries as the only alternative to Obama that can win. The polar ends will be upset but most of them will vote for Romney like the way they held their nose and voted for McCain.
I heard McCain this weekend in an interview and couldn't believe that he actually won the nomination in 2008. Anybody but McCain?
