Cynical Guy: the lefty media is willing to attack Obama in non-election years, they want to influence his decisions and encourage the public to guide him further to the Left. It also helps them pretend that they are un-biased.
But watch them close ranks as the election gets closer and praise him for how well things are going despite the economy being so bad. (Unless they know he is doomed to lose the election, and then they will attack him like hyenas.)
